The Socratic Way of Life is the first English-language book-length study of the philosopher Xenophon’s masterwork. In it, Thomas L. Pangle shows that Xenophon depicts more authentically than does Plato the true teachings and way of life of the citizen philosopher Socrates, founder of Xenophon. It has been some time since we discussed the first book of Xenophon’s Memorabilia, a biographical account of Socrates that, among other @MassimoPigliucci/book-club.
Xenophon's admiration for his teacher is clear in writings such as Symposium, Apology, and Memorabilia. Xenophon was away on his Persian campaign during the trial and death of Socrates. Nevertheless, much of Xenophon's Socratic writing, especially Apology, concerns that very trial and the defence Socrates put forward. Socrates: Xenophon vs. Plato Title. Memorabilia is also known by its Latin title Commentarii and a variety of English translations (Recollections, Memoirs, Conversations of Socrates, etc.).. Date of composition. The Memorabilia was probably completed after BC, as one passage (III.5) appears to assume the military situation after the Spartan defeat at the battle of Leuctra in that (Xenophon).
